This wiki is part of the Professional Portfolio of Shelley Pike. Please feel free to browse around and use any ideas you find useful. This wiki can also be created using a variety of online tools. Similar collaborative math work spaces are currently being used at my school with other software including Evernote and OneNote.

Description of this Project

This wiki has been created as my final project in the Master's of Educational Technology course (ETEC532) at the University of British Columbia. It is a model framework for how a wiki could be used with Junior/Intermediate students to bring Literacy and Technology instructional strategies into Mathematics to improve students' understanding, communication and engagement in Mathematics problem solving. There are sample student pages with content created to represent what student multimedia clips and comments might look like. Please visit as many of the pages as you like and offer your questions, comments and feedback on ways it could be realistically used with students. You may request to be added to the workspace so you can comment on any page, or you can email me directly if you prefer. Thank you for collaborating with me on this project. I am really excited to help teachers try it with students this year!

Welcome to our Online Math Notebook!

This is a real workspace!  A wiki is a special kind of web site that allows people to work together to create content online. In our wiki, you will have your own pages to create and post your learning in Mathematics. You can also give and receive feedback from others by leaving comments on each others' pages. One of the really neat things about the wiki is that you can collaborate with a partner or small group to solve problems, even if you are not in the same class! Your notebook pages will provide us with evidence of your learning over time and will act as a working-portfolio for you. It allows teacher and student to comment on and add or delete content. This type of portfolio is used to aid in communication.

Teachers, the purpose of using an online notebook is to give more opportunities to bring technology, writing  and collaboration into our math classes. If you want to know the background as to why a wiki in math, please read more here.

Students, click on the Create a Page link (top right) to create your first Notebook page. Save it in the folder called Student Pages.

Your first task!

Choose a mathematics symbol or picture to represent how you feel about math and tell us a little about why you chose it. You can add the picture by uploading it or copying the url if it is an image from the internet. Remember to respect copyright and use images with permission. You can click on the sample student pages in the Navigation Window on the right (Courtney and Shelley) to get an idea what a Math Notebook will include as the year continues.

Hi Shelley,
I like the many options within your wiki. I'm wondering if you would be willing to let teachers actually copy this template to try in their classrooms? I can see students creating their own glossary and using the iPad to take pictures of a visual representation that they created.

Totally okay with me, Pam. I would love to hear how it goes.
